Allow us to introduce ourselves ...

FCUG is the Fairfield County Computer Users Group. We are an independent non-profit club working to enhance knowledge and enjoyment in the use of personal computers (IBM compatible and Apple) and related software, hardware and Internet technologies. We're a diverse group ranging from students to retirees, from novices to experts, from part-time amateurs to full-time professionals.

Our mission is to help each other and further the education of club members at all levels.

The primary ways we accomplish this mission is by having monthly meetings that include a question and answer session, one or two interesting speakers presenting a technology topic and by publishing "The Voice of FCUG", a monthly newsletter that is distributed to members and posted on our web site.

During the Q&A, attendees have the opportunity to ask questions and share their experiences. No question is too trivial.

There is also time to socialize and talk technology during a refreshment break.

Newcomers are welcome to attend.

Software and hardware reviews, question and answer sessions, access to people using the same products you are, some who are using products you have never heard of, a terrific monthly newsletter, occasional free give-aways and guest speakers who know their stuff  .......  if things like this are of interest, then by all means attend one of our meetings.

Our meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 PM at the New Canaan Historical Center near downtown New Canaan, Connecticut.

Membership fee is $30/yr prorated. It's a great value. Call Membership Chairperson Dick Booth (203)847-8047 or email him.

Our History

In April 1980 (yes, we've been around for almost 3 decades) twenty or so computer neophytes gathered at the Computer Works store in Westport, Connecticut and formed the Fairfield County TRS-80 Users Group. Most of them were new owners or soon-to-be owners of the TRS-80 Model 1.

The TRS-80 at that time cost more than an advanced level Pentium does today and had 4K of memory and a processor speed of 1.77 MHz. Compare that to today's computers average 512MB of memory and 3 Gigaherz processor speeds! But even with that limited hardware, sporting home-grown programs that we typed in by hand (either self-written, copied from some friend or magazine) in BASIC, that was all that was needed to get us totally and irreversibly hooked on home desk-top computing.

In 1983 the IBM PC and compatibles took over the personal computer market and the Fairfield County TRS-80 Users Group left our trusty TRS-80's behind with a tear, switched to IBM compatibles (along with the occasional curse), and we became the Fairfield County Computer Users Group. Our monthly newsletter, formerly "The Voice of the 80", became "The Voice of FCUG".
